If you build it

In the movie if you build it design is used as a form of advocacy to help the community of Bertie county. A design program is implemented for students and provides them with a hands on learning experience. There was not much opportunity in the county for young people and they were not provided with much of a learning experience in the classroom. The Studio H program allowed the students to learn in a different way and work on projects that made the community better. The farmers market that they built was a huge way to impact the community for the better, providing jobs and a place to get food for a lower price. I think that using design in this was as a form of advocacy is great because it gave the students a sense of opportunity and a feeling that what they were doing was important. I think using design as a form of advocacy and programs like Studio H could help many other communities like it did Bertie county.

Design Profile 11-12

The 11th designer was Lindsey Fay. She loved art classes in elementary school and got the opportunity to help design a playground which inspired her and started her passion for design. She got her undergraduate degree at UK and now practices, teaches, and does research and community work. She sees design in health care with how it works and how the needs of the providers, patients and visitors is all met. She and believes in experimental learning, she encourages to go to places to learn. She also sees design in cohousing where one big house is surrounded by smaller houses to create a sense of community. She believes that design will be utilized to impact social issues and to give back.

The 12th designer was Mark O`Bryan who is an architect. He got his degree from UK and met his wife who is an interior designer here. He has teaches and practices and loves to study and learn. He has built churches and lots of other religious buildings. He is inspired by the greek myth of the wings,  the labyrinth, and his stamp/logo. He takes students on trips to paris, rome,  and Greece to help them experience architecture. He believes that design is always evolving and that there are so many choices for design and they need to be picked meaningfully.

Design Profile 9-10

The 9th designer was Randall Vaughn. Vaughn is an architect and president of Gray Architects and Engineers. He is a University of Kentucky Alum of the college of Architecture. He believes that design is apart of every aspect of our lives from the clothes we wear to the cars that we drive and he believes that everything was designed for a purpose. He asked a few of his colleagues the questions we have been discussing and here were some of their responses..
 -Design can influence everything
-Design can bring order or cause chaos
-good design is seamless and comfortable
-the next few steps of the profession tend to point to architects and designers coming together and having multiple trades
-technologies don't allow for better design, just allow the buyer to see what they are buying better.

The 10th designer was Helen Turner. She sums up her design story in one word "opportunity".
She got her undergraduate degree from Ohio University in interior architecture. She started practicing right away working at a small design firm and then got a job at a larger firm. She was laid off but this pushed her to go back to school and get her masters of science in architecture. She also had the opportunity to go on a 5 week archaeological dig in Pompay. She believes design can have both a positive and negative effect on our world. She is very interested in energy efficient and environmental efficient design and sees design moving towards that way.

Designer Profile 7-8

The 7th designer was Timothy Lucas who is an architect. His father was an interior designer so he was interested in design from a young age. He got his bachelor of arts and architecture from the university of Kentucky in 11974. He worked at many different places throughout his life that involved architecture and eventually started his own firm Lucas/Schwering Architects. He believes that design is in everything around us from the clothes that we wear to the artifacts that we use in every day lives. He thinks that when design is well done it has the ability to transform the lives of the people who use the designed thing. As far as where design is headed, he thins that computers have transformed that design profession and that the use of computers will only continue to expand. He hopes that this will be a source of better communication and collaboration.

The 8th designer was Melody Jackson. She teaches first year architecture here at UK. She originally did not know that she wanted to be a designer and was originally on the pre-med track, but she was always inspired by the work of Leonardo Devinvci. She had the opportunity to study in Scotland. She believes that all choices are design choices and is inspired by things that involve a lot of imagination and creativity. She believes that design is headed in a collaborative path and that design is beginning to blend with other fields like engineering.

Designer Profile 5-6

The 5th designer was Adriane Grumbein. She majored in communications and now teaches in the integrated communications section specifically marketing and creativity classes. Her design story began when she was in high school and she designed the schools web page. Once she decided design was her thing she entered college as an art major but then switched it to a communications major. She did so because her view of design was more of a problem solving approach. She enjoys helping students take raw ideas into finished products. She believes that design is everywhere which will lead to design be more connected with business to communicate their ideas.

The 6th designer was Joe Ray Barreau. He is an architect, lighting designer, and a teacher at UK. He has a lot of experience in design and loves to share his knowledge with his students. His love for design started when he designed a tree house in Cuba with his father. He has come to the realization that the things we don't normally focus on mean a lot in design. For that reason he works mainly in lighting. He believes that the newest technological development in lighting has created a revolution and that LED light has changed the way lighting is done forever. It is being incorporated everywhere and has opened up a whole new world for lighting.

Designer Profile 2,3 and 4

The second designer we heard from was Adam Langston. Adam became interested in design at a very  young age. He knew by the time that he was in middle school that he wanted to be an architect. He took some drafting classes in high school and eventually went on to enter the architect program at UK his second year of college. He went and studied abroad in Paris and Rome may and june of 2014. During this time he began to learn that there are all kinds of design ideas that aren't knew but can be implemented in new ways. As for the future for design he thinks that technology is taking over which is making collaboration a lot easier. He also believes there will be a lot more 3D printed and digitally fabricated things.

The third designer we heard from was Julie Sniadowski. Julie`s designer story starts with an art background. She took painting classes at an early age and was accepted into the Governor`s School of the Arts in high school. She received her bachelors degree from UK. During her second year she got more into digital fabrication and drawing on the computer. She also studied abroad in Paris and Rome like Adam. She draws a lot of inspiration around her. She believes that there is nothing original, just evolution or improvement. For the future of design she thinks that there will be an expansion in technology an expansion in what problems are tackled.

The fourth designer we heard from was Heather Hemmer. She originally was not interested in design and would have never predicted this is where she would end up. Her junior year of high school she took and art class and became interested. She continued to take similar classes during her freshman year of college and learned how to use the computer programs during her second year. She also thinks that design is all evolution and that you have to let it talk to you. Designing something is what makes you, you. She also likes to make use of someone else`s trash. For the future of design related to her, she wants to actually go out and see designed things in person. She is going to Thailand in the winter and eventually wants to move to San Francisco.

Designer Profile 1

The first designer was Patrick L Lucas. He currently is the director of interiors here at the University of Kentucky and has been in this position since 2013. Lucas grew up around across from an architect so he got interested at an early age. His design story starts at architect school where he got his degree in Cincinnati. His 5th year however he changed his mind and got a certificate in historic preservation. He got a call to teach a design history course and found that he enjoyed it. He got his masters in interior from UK and his American Studies degree from Michigan State, and is now in the position he currently holds. Through the artifacts he mentioned one can speculate that he is a fan of light, curved shapes, things that tell a story, and repeating patterns. In terms of what he thinks is next for design at UK he thinks there is a possibility of a product design degree being added and a possible relocation to the rebuilds building. In terms of design as a whole he believes social media and technology is shifting the way things are designed and shifting the rolls of design.

Museum of You

1. My Iphone
2. My clothes( comfortable cheer clothes)
3. Cheer shoes
4. My north face backpack
5. Candles
6. My Bible
7.  Mac Laptop
8.  Mac Make-up
9. My Car a jeep liberty
10.My cheerleading uniform

These artifacts to me describe the things that are present in my life everyday. The two biggies here are school and cheer which are seen in my backpack, lap top, cheer shoes, and cheer uniform. These artifacts show that i am incredibly busy. My phone probably says the most about me though because that is the artifact that has the most about me on it. It includes pictures, my music, my apps I like, and my messages. The clothes I wear (which is usually more on the comfortable side) shows that I enjoy to feel comfy when I am out and about. My Bible is a big one also because this lets people know that I am a Christian and that God is a big part of my life. I added make up because it is something that I use every single day. I also am a huge fan of candles, this shows that enjoy to come in to a room with a nice smell and just relax.

Movie Review

The three movies Wall-e, Helvetica, and Everything Illuminated are all very different but are related to each other through design elements that connect them. Wall-e is about a robot who has been left on a trash filled Earth all alone and has to clean up and compact the trash. Wall-e is a collector and finds a plant that he adds to his collection. Wall-e meets another robot on Earth named Eve who was sent to Earth to find living plants. He shows her the plant and she it is immediately stored in her compartment and her system shuts down. The spaceship comes to get Eve and Wall-E follows realizing that there are humans on the ship along with many other technological devices that make life easier for humans. Wall-e and Eve end up falling in love. Eve has trouble getting the plant to the part of the ship so they can return to earth because of the autopilot. She eventually gets the plant where it needs to be so they can return back to Earth. Helvetica is documentary about a typeface. It described the use of the font Helvetica and how commonly it is used of how simple and easy it is to read. It explains how it is used for magazines, advertisements, billboards and many other ways because of its simple design. The movie Everything Illuminated is about a collector Johnathan who receives a photo from his grandmother of his grandfather and a woman Augustine. He sets out to search for this woman because he knows she saved his grandfather in the war. On his journey he meets a woman named Lista who is also a collector and happens to be Augusitines sister. Lisa gives Jonathan a box so he can understand his grandfather`s past better.

Helvetica shows the use of design through a typeface. The movie describes how the the font helvetica has made reading things clear and easy. It eventually became seen everywhere because it`s plain style. Words and fonts are important when it comes to things like advertising so many people have adopted this font because it is simple and bold. It gets the point across in a very simple manner that everyone can understand.

In everything illuminated design is seen in the collection aspect of the film. Johnathan and Lista both are collectors and the things they collect show insight to who they are. The film shows how simple designed things can have a bigger meaning and have the ability to tell a story. After Johnathan found Lista and received the box he was able to connect with his grandfather and see into his past. This shows how it may not be obvious but the design of something and what someone takes from it can tell a lot about a person.

Wall-e had elements of design throughout the whole movie. The technology that was shown in the movie emphasized how those designed objects were basically essential to humans and their survival because they had become so dependent on the technology. The humans had to have the technology to function because they had become so overweight and unable to move much.  Wall-e himself was a designed artifact because he is a robot. The movie itself is also animated which took a lot of design to put together. All of these features of the film have the idea of design in them.

In each of these movies design is a major part of the movie even if it is not originally seen. Helvetica is about a designed font, Wall-e is about a designed robot, and in Everything Illuminated Johnathan collects designed artifacts. Although the design elements are somewhat different for each of the movies, they still have a connection. This goes to show how design can be influential in a number of different ways whether is be through a font or a artifact.

I think that the biggest lesson I learned from this was how big of an impact design can have without it even really being known. It may not always be obvious but with just about anything you see, there is a design element to it.  I learned that design is in every aspect of life and can be influential in many different ways. Something as simple as the design of a font can allow people to read and understand better. I think watching these movies also showed the number of ways design can enhance the human experience like we`ve discussed in class before. The font made things easier to read, the technology in wall-e made the humans lives easier, and the artifacts Johnathan collected gave him insight to his grandfather`s past. Overall i realized how big of an impact design can have as a whole.

it`s FONT-mental

This font was found at the restaurant Street Craves. It is printed on what is supposed to resemble a street sign and that is how the waiter knows where to bring the food. The font looks much like the font on real street signs which is what is it designed for. The letters are large and clear which draw attention to the words and make them easy to read. I think this font was chosen for that purpose, so the waiters could easily see the words to know where to bring the food.

This font was found on a drink cup at a restaurant called Freakin` Unbelievable Burgers. This font is very bold and is the middle of the cup which makes it stand out. I think this font was chosen to emphasize the "freakin`" part of the name. The font being so bold makes one wonder what is so FREAKIN` unbelievable about the burgers which is what i think it is designed for so it attracts customers and makes them want to try their food.
This font was found on a coffee mug that I use everyday. It is more of a girly font which obviously attracts girls like me who are suckers for cute things like this. It looks elegant and cozy to me which is what I think the designer wanted it to look like. You want to be comfortable and feel good in the mornings when you are drinking your coffee and this font makes me feel that way.
This font was found on my parking ticket I got the other day. It is large and bold because the design of this was meant to let you know.... you messed up. The font being white in color on a blue background makes it standout even more. The whole purpose of this font is for it to draw attention and make sure it is not ignored. I think the designer wanted this to be simple but yet attention drawing so it would easily get the point across that you are not supposed to park there.
This font was found on a prescription bottle form meijer. The meijer logo font is very large which is immediately noticed. I think this was designed this way so that the focus would be on the brand meijer to attract business. It`s also in red which is a major attention grabber. The lowercase letters make it simple in a way too which I like. I think the designer of this wanted the font to be bold and attention grabbing but also simple letting people know that they provide for everyone.

Analysis 9 and 10

The 9th movie I reviewed was Emily Bramel`s movie on Keeneland. Overall Emily did a great job of addressing all parts of the rubric. She very clearly points out where she talks about each of the 5 big points and does a great job of connecting her artifact to each. The only part about the way she did this that I didn't like was that it was a lot of words on a page and got a little bit hard to read. By the end of it I was tired of reading words. I think she could have done a little bit better of a job with the craft of the movie but overall it was very good and covered everything it was supposed to.

The 10th and final movie I reviewed was Haven Dumond`s movie on his car. I was extremely impressed with this movie. Although this movie didn't have voice over`s either, the slides that had the words on them were very easy to read and weren't distracting. The movie covered all parts of the rubric very clearly and in great detail. The overall craft of the movie was very good. I really enjoyed the videos of the things crashing into the car, it did a good job of portraying a design feature of the vehicle. This was one of my favorite movie`s. Haven did a great job connecting his artifact to all parts of the rubric.

Analysis 7 and 8

The 7th movie I reviewed was Lexi Watts movie on Rupp Arena. Lexi did a fantastic job with the craft her movie i thought. The images and videos she included of Rupp really bought the stadium to life for the viewer. Although she did not point out each part of the rubric as clearly as some of the other movies I have reviewed did, I still believe she covered all parts there was to talk about. My favorite part was where she included a clip from coach Cal talking. I especially enjoyed the way she described how Rupp connects to media, that was the most clear point to me.

The 8th movie I reviewed was Spencer Anderson`s movie. This movie was overall very good and covered everything on the rubric exactly but it did not include any sound besides music. I would have enjoyed this movie more if he would have included voice overs instead of just slides with words on them. It got a little bit boring to look at after awhile because there was so many words. The images and videos he included looked very nice though and tied the whole movie together very well.

Analysis 5 and 6

Holly did an absolutely fantastic job. This was by far my favorite movie to watch so far. I loved every single part of it. Not only did she cover everything on the rubric but the craft of the movie was amazing. She discussed and connected all 5 parts of the rubric very well throughout her movie. I really enjoyed the flow of the movie and how the voice overs were constant as the images were playing. The videos she included looked great and really brought the movie to life. I am very impressed with this movie. I think that it deserves a 100.

The second movie I watched was Hope Stewarts. I think she did fairly well. She seems to have covered all parts of the rubric and did a good job of connecting her artifact or place in this case to social and cultural practices and also business and media. I also enjoyed the video footage she had at the begging of her movie. The pictures she included were good but I would have liked to see more video footage because the really tied the whole movie together. The big logo in the middle of the screen was distracting though and took away from the craft of the movie a little bit.

Analysis 3 and 4

Anthony did great job with the craft of his movie. I was very impressed with how he put everything together. He also did all of the parts of the rubric. He described in great detail every part and design feature of the ps4. He also even gave some background information. He does a great job of connecting his artifact to social practices when he talks about how one can connect with friends and keep up with what they are doing with this artifact. Overall a very good job, all parts of the rubric were met.

Maggie does an excellent job portraying her fossil watch. I especially loved the music that went with this movie. The craft of the movie was very nice and looked like it took a lot of time and effort. She does a great job of explaining the design process and included many neat visuals. She also does a greta job of showing how the artifact connects with all the other parts of the rubric. I especially enjoyed how she tied in the media. Very good job overall.

Analysis 1 and 2

The first movie I watched was Kristen LangHorne`s movie on her North Face backpack. The movie was great and hit all parts of the rubric. I would give this person a 100. The overall design and craft of the movie was also very good. They do a great job of connecting the artifact to the culture of activity and adventure and also the culture of education. They also do an excellent job connecting the artifact to media and how the North Face brand uses media. The description of how the artifact enhances the human experience was also well thought out and well explained. Great job.

The second person I reviewed was Travis McLaughlin`s movie on the design of Keeneland. This movie was also great and hit every part of the rubric. The video footage that was added was a very nice touch and the craft of the movie was great. I would give this person a 100 also, they covered all 5 parts and presented them very well. This person also did a great job with connecting their artifact with culture. They presented their artifact very well. I liked how they did their voice overs with the videos. This was very creative.

Informance Reflection

Making this movie was a long process that taught me a lot. The biggest challenge I had when making this movie was finding good visuals to to represent what I wanted to say about the artifact. Also putting everything together to make the movie was a challenge because I am not very good with that kind of stuff.  I knew what I wanted to say but I had a hard time deciding how I wanted to portray the artifact.  I learned a lot about how my artifact is related to the culture of beauty. I didn't realize how big of an impact this artifact had and how many women buy this artifact to aid in their beauty lifestyles. I also learned a lot about the company that made the perfume bottle, they are a huge company and I didn't really understand how big of a company they were until this project. This whole experience taught me that a lot of elements go into designing something. There are a lot of different steps in the process and problems will come up along the way. There is a lot more that goes into a designed artifact than what meets the eye.

Target Observation

This Elsa doll is a product that is huge with children. ( Little girls in particularly) The doll is small so it is easy for a small child to hold an play with. It also looks just like the character in the movie which allows the doll to come to life for little children. The packaging of the box is clear so you can easily see the doll inside and has cute snowflakes on it to represent the "Frozen" aspect of the product.  It has the disney logo on it which is promoting Disney`s business. This product the media form of a character and turns it into a product that children can actually hold in their hands.

This product is from a company that is very popular. It is a type of facial cleaning towelette. The package is yellow which sticks out and grabs attention and has the logo of the producer. The product is popular with women because of make up and was in the make up section of target. It also states on the front "removes dirt, oil, and make-up without rinsing" so the consumer can easily see what the product does. This is a good business side to the product because consumers know that they are getting out of the product before they buy it.

These bongos are designed to appeal to people interested in music. They were found around other musical instruments. They are small so they are easily picked up and used. They are wooden and have the drum part on top which makes the sound. They packaging has an open part that shows the bongos and says what they are so incase someone didn't know they could easily see. It also has the company brand name on the packaging to promote their business. This product would more than likely be bought by musicians or people in the music industry. This can be then related to media because whoever buys them may then produce music with them and put it out for other people to hear.

This samsung smartphone is sleek and looks very sharp. It is white which gives it a very clean look. It is also touch screen which everyone loves in a phone nowadays. It is thin and easy to either hold or fit in a pocket. The screen is made out of a thick glass so it is hard to break. It has the samsung logo on the front. Many people own smart phones and other companies like this one have to compete with apple. This product`s design is similar to the iphone and has to work to get consumers to buy their product since apple is such a large company.

This basketball was found in the sports section of target, It is round and bouncy like all basketballs. It has the brand name on the front and also has the NCAA logo on the front. Having this logo helps business because sports fans want a quality basketball and since the NCAA is promoting it, it must be of good quality. This product is also advertising for the NCAA. The packaging has a hold where the ball fits so it can easily be seen and the packaging also has the name of the company on it so the consumer can easily tell who made the product. The rest of the packaging is white which makes the orange basketball in the middle be the focus and stand out.

Media Impact

My artifact, a perfume bottle is seen and related to media quite a bit. First there are many advertisements for this product that can be seen around stores. Juicy Couture wants to get there product out there so they put out a lot of advertisements for there product. The perfume brand also has a website that can people can visit and see their products. Other forms like billboards, posters, and even tweets and instagram posts are other ways this artifact is related to media. Another form of media that this artifact is impacted by is phone and social connections. Many people rave about this product on their youtube channels or blogs and even text and communicate about it with their friends who also enjoy this product.

Movie Discussion Summary

I learned a lot from this discussion and got a lot of helpful feedback. Looking at everyone`s questions helped answer a lot of my own questions too. The question "What is the best way to show how an artifact is important to business?' gave me the idea to research the business and some of it`s demographics. The question about how to make an artifact (Raybans) social gave me the idea about how culture can play a part into it and show an image of people enjoying the artifact. The question about whether we should use pictures or videos was helpful because I did not know that we were able to incorporate both. The question about learning outcome 1 clarified for me that we need to talk about the design process. Also the questions about using powerpoint were helpful because I was considering using it but now know it would not be the easiest way.

Creative approaches

I thought that today`s activity was very fun and useful. It helped me brainstorm ideas that I could use for my movie. I think that my favorite approach was the jingle because it was a lot of fun to try to make up. I think that incorporating fun and creative things like that will make the movie more interesting and more well designed. I also liked the tweet approach because that was a little weird to do at first but ended up being useful because it created a new way to describe something. Especially since our generation is all about twitter, It would be cool to talk about the design of the artifact in a different way like a tweet that would be more interesting to the audience.

Story Board Final

By reviewing other storyboards I learned a lot about how other people included the ideas of design in their pictures of their artifacts. I learned that I could have probably made mine a little more visual. Some of the ones I reviewed had a lot of great images that really captured my interest and described what they wanted to say well. Reviewing others storyboards also gave me ideas about my movie. I took away from this that in my movie I need to make sure that my images adequately reflect what I am saying about my artifact and that they are creative and interesting so that the movies looks good when it is finished. It got me thinking in the direction I want to go for my movie. I enjoyed seeing what everyone else had on their storyboard and how the brought the ideas of the design of their artifact to life by all of the interesting images.

noupe.com

One way the designers can shift viewers perception with the design in a movie is color. In the Harry Potter example Umbrindge was in pink and this made her stand out. When a designer wants something to stand out or make a point to the viewer colors can be used to get that point across. Color can also be used to create contrast like in the Pride and Prejudice example. This way the viewer can easily see a good/bad relationship. Another element that can be used is the complexity of the design. In the still from the Chronicles of Narnia there was a lot going on, but there was one main focal point. Thus draws the viewers eyes to what the designer wants them to see. The same goes with size like in the Alice and Wonderland example, the changing sizes for an interesting outcome. These elements of design allow the designer to show the reader what they are wanting them to see in unique and interesting ways. These ideas are important for when creating my movie because these types of things can be used to make the overall product better.

Story Board Check In

From the in class group I learned that there are many different ways an artifact can be interpreted. Many of my group members had really good ideas about what they wanted to say about their artifact that I would have never thought of. This made me think deeper about my artifact and things that i could talk about with its design. I liked how each of my group members took what we had to say about our artifact in a different way to make it interesting. This experience will help me on my story board because I have even more ideas about what I could talk about and show.

Place

My hometown Richmond, Ky is a city in the county seat of Madison County. In the city of Richmond there exists a very similar city square area like discussed in the reading and lecture. In the downtown are there is a business district that includes many victorian style structures. There is a court house in the very center of the downtown area that is the main focus of the city square. All around the courthouse area there are multiple local businesses that people can visit. The design of the city square was meant for the courthouse to be in the middle and a number of businesses surrounding this local point which is exactly how it turned out and can be seen when visiting downtown Richmond.

Artifact Selection

My artifact is the Juicy Couture perfume bottle.

Post Card Final

The design of my post card began with finding the image I wanted to use to represent my quote. My quote was "Design Is Everything" and I thought that the image of the DNA molecule represented this well because DNA is the building block of all life forms and without DNA there would be no life. This can be compared to how without out design the world would be nothing so I thought that this image showed that idea well. I also like how the image was dark leaving a very bold impression. I printed out the image and glued it to card stock. I then created the back of the postcard to look how normal post cards look and glued that to the other side of the 4x6 in card stock. I decided to put the citation for the image on the back because you couldn't see it on the front with the image being mostly black.

Buildings

The airport, skyscrapers, and house talked about in the lecture all have design aspects that represent the ideas of American culture and how American society was forming. The airport  designed represented the idea of mobility, always wanting to be on the go and always wanting to explore new places. The most important design feature that represents this idea in the airports is how most airports have windows everywhere so you can see the planes coming and going. Skyscrapers, which are mostly corporation buildings were getting taller and taller as years went on and I think this race for the tallest skyscraper shows the idea to "be better" as well because there was constantly a race to try to make them taller and better. The houses like the bungalow which had very spacious porches represent the friendly aspect of American`s and the overhang garages that show off the cars of the Ranch style houses express the mobility of American society.

House

After watching the lecture and reading Clark`s readings I've decided my house would be much like the ranch style houses. To me those type of houses represent American culture best mainly because of the way they are designed to fit into the characteristics of American life. The design feature of the overhang garage showing off the car is a great example of this because American culture is very mobile and showing off the car is a great way to represent that. Although they are very over the top and unrealistic for most Americans I also like the Mansion type house. Those type of houses show the aspect of how Americans like to everything better and show off what they have. As American`s I feel like there is this sense that we do everything better than everyone else and I think that it can be seen in those types of houses that are designed to be over the top and unnecessary.

Media Depot

Today I went to the Media Depot in the library and learned about all of the services that they have to offer. They have multiple computers where you can work with different softwares to create movie presentations and other types of projects. They also have an audio recording room along with a recording room that has a board where you can record yourself giving presentations. There is also a green screen room available which would be a very cool things to use for projects. At the media depot there are also people who are skilled and knowledgeable in the softwares and programs that can aid you in projects if you need help. The Media Depot will be a very useful resource when needing to complete projects for this class and many others throughout college.

Space

In an ideal office setting design is important for each of the different types of spaces that are present. The four work modes of an office setting: focus, collaborate, learn, and socialize all have different key design aspects. In a focus setting an individual needs a desk to do their work and accomplish tasks. There are also usually filing cabinets and other personal items in this setting. This type of setting is a personal work are for an individual to get things done. In a collaboration space there is usually a table with chairs for everyone to sit around and discuss. There also is usually a type of technology like a whiteboard or projector so a group can share ideas and work together. A learning setting is where individuals can sharpen and learn new skills. This work space often includes desks or tables for individuals to sit at and some type of technology like a projector. A socialize setting is where individuals go to get away from the work setting to relax and talk with coworkers casually. This is usually a kitchen or an area where multiple people can come together to take a break.

Prown Worksheet

My artifact is a perfume bottle from the brand Juicy Couture. The bottle is a 2 inch by 2 inch square bottle that is made of an opaque glass that is very thick. The lid to the bottle is also made out of the same glass and is about an inch in diameter. Around the lid is a pink ribbon tied in a bow. Attached to the bow is a gold sign that is very small and says "Couture." On the front of the perfume bottle there is a detailed design in gold. A crown as the center of the gold design and there is a J on one side of the crown and a C on the other side of the crown. Around the crown and the  JC are dots formed in the shape of circles.

3 aspects of American Character

Athletic: An object representing the athletic aspect of American Character would be a football stadium or in this case Commonwealth Stadium because it reperesnts American`s excitement over sports like football. For years and years American`s have fed off of the excitement of each other at athletic events, even though most American`s are unable to play a sport at the professional or college level they share interest in the athletic abilities of others and enjoy watching athletic events in large arenas or stadiums like this one.
Comfort Seeking: An object representing the comfort seeking aspect of American Character is leggings because every American wants to feel comfortable and free when they are out and about and leggings do just that. Leggings have become a huge phenomenon with women today because of their soft material, flexibly they have when moving, and their ability to make one feel as if they aren't actually wearing pants.

Mobility: An object that represents the American Characteristic of mobility are Heelys because they make getting place to place easy and efficient and with American lifestyle we are always looking for an easier and more efficient way to do things. Heelys can either be used as regular shoes or used and a type of skate almost, which makes things easy when you are walking somewhere and in a hurry because you can "ride" there so to speak instead of having to use the energy to walk the whole way.

Artifact From Class

My artifact is a Kentucky Bracelet I was given as a graduation gift. It is in the shape of the state of Kentucky and has the word "Kentucky" written on it representing that Kentucky is my home and where I go to school. The desgin element here is appealing to big UK fans like myself. It looks as though it is made of copper and has a somewhat rustic look to it. It also has a clasp so it is easy to get off and on. The design of this bracelet is convenient because you don't have to worry about it falling off. The bracelet is slim so it fits around your wrist nice and tightly. It adds to the idea of memory because when I wear it, it makes me think of my friend back home who got it for me. It`s also very fashionable and easy to wear because it goes with a lot of outfits. It is a piece of jewelry so it is made mostly for girls to wear. Although men can wear it, it is desgined specifically for women. This Artifact expresses design in many ways including it`s fashion appeal, it`s convenience to wear and it`s ability to represent an individual for this case it being my home.

Water Bottle

In an ordinary plastic one time use water bottle elements of design can be found. The place of design comes in when thinking about safety, convince, portability, and many other aspects of a plastic water bottle. The bottle is made of cheap plastic that is opaque and can easily be seen through and has two parts, the actual bottle and the screw on lid. This adds to the overall safety of the bottle because users can clearly see what they are consuming and can close the bottle so liquid won`t spill out. The ridges in the water bottle`s design like in the picture make the bottle more durable. There is usually a logo around the bottle that says the companies logo which is usually written in white or blue like in the picture which often symbolizes clean or pure. The use of cheap plastic for the water bottle is convenient because it can easily be thrown away and the green triangle on the bottle lets the consumer know that the bottle is recyclable so it can be reused. The water bottle is small in size as seen in the picture and fits perfectly in an average sized human hand which makes it convenient and portable. It can easily be carried around without hassle and can also fit in a backpack, purse, or other bag.
