Designer Profile 1

The first designer was Patrick L Lucas. He currently is the director of interiors here at the University of Kentucky and has been in this position since 2013. Lucas grew up around across from an architect so he got interested at an early age. His design story starts at architect school where he got his degree in Cincinnati. His 5th year however he changed his mind and got a certificate in historic preservation. He got a call to teach a design history course and found that he enjoyed it. He got his masters in interior from UK and his American Studies degree from Michigan State, and is now in the position he currently holds. Through the artifacts he mentioned one can speculate that he is a fan of light, curved shapes, things that tell a story, and repeating patterns. In terms of what he thinks is next for design at UK he thinks there is a possibility of a product design degree being added and a possible relocation to the rebuilds building. In terms of design as a whole he believes social media and technology is shifting the way things are designed and shifting the rolls of design.

These artifacts to me describe the things that are present in my life everyday. The two biggies here are school and cheer which are seen in my backpack, lap top, cheer shoes, and cheer uniform. These artifacts show that i am incredibly busy. My phone probably says the most about me though because that is the artifact that has the most about me on it. It includes pictures, my music, my apps I like, and my messages. The clothes I wear (which is usually more on the comfortable side) shows that I enjoy to feel comfy when I am out and about. My Bible is a big one also because this lets people know that I am a Christian and that God is a big part of my life. I added make up because it is something that I use every single day. I also am a huge fan of candles, this shows that enjoy to come in to a room with a nice smell and just relax.

Movie Review

The three movies Wall-e, Helvetica, and Everything Illuminated are all very different but are related to each other through design elements that connect them. Wall-e is about a robot who has been left on a trash filled Earth all alone and has to clean up and compact the trash. Wall-e is a collector and finds a plant that he adds to his collection. Wall-e meets another robot on Earth named Eve who was sent to Earth to find living plants. He shows her the plant and she it is immediately stored in her compartment and her system shuts down. The spaceship comes to get Eve and Wall-E follows realizing that there are humans on the ship along with many other technological devices that make life easier for humans. Wall-e and Eve end up falling in love. Eve has trouble getting the plant to the part of the ship so they can return to earth because of the autopilot. She eventually gets the plant where it needs to be so they can return back to Earth. Helvetica is documentary about a typeface. It described the use of the font Helvetica and how commonly it is used of how simple and easy it is to read. It explains how it is used for magazines, advertisements, billboards and many other ways because of its simple design. The movie Everything Illuminated is about a collector Johnathan who receives a photo from his grandmother of his grandfather and a woman Augustine. He sets out to search for this woman because he knows she saved his grandfather in the war. On his journey he meets a woman named Lista who is also a collector and happens to be Augusitines sister. Lisa gives Jonathan a box so he can understand his grandfather`s past better.

Helvetica shows the use of design through a typeface. The movie describes how the the font helvetica has made reading things clear and easy. It eventually became seen everywhere because it`s plain style. Words and fonts are important when it comes to things like advertising so many people have adopted this font because it is simple and bold. It gets the point across in a very simple manner that everyone can understand.

In everything illuminated design is seen in the collection aspect of the film. Johnathan and Lista both are collectors and the things they collect show insight to who they are. The film shows how simple designed things can have a bigger meaning and have the ability to tell a story. After Johnathan found Lista and received the box he was able to connect with his grandfather and see into his past. This shows how it may not be obvious but the design of something and what someone takes from it can tell a lot about a person.

Wall-e had elements of design throughout the whole movie. The technology that was shown in the movie emphasized how those designed objects were basically essential to humans and their survival because they had become so dependent on the technology. The humans had to have the technology to function because they had become so overweight and unable to move much.  Wall-e himself was a designed artifact because he is a robot. The movie itself is also animated which took a lot of design to put together. All of these features of the film have the idea of design in them.


In each of these movies design is a major part of the movie even if it is not originally seen. Helvetica is about a designed font, Wall-e is about a designed robot, and in Everything Illuminated Johnathan collects designed artifacts. Although the design elements are somewhat different for each of the movies, they still have a connection. This goes to show how design can be influential in a number of different ways whether is be through a font or a artifact.


I think that the biggest lesson I learned from this was how big of an impact design can have without it even really being known. It may not always be obvious but with just about anything you see, there is a design element to it.  I learned that design is in every aspect of life and can be influential in many different ways. Something as simple as the design of a font can allow people to read and understand better. I think watching these movies also showed the number of ways design can enhance the human experience like we`ve discussed in class before. The font made things easier to read, the technology in wall-e made the humans lives easier, and the artifacts Johnathan collected gave him insight to his grandfather`s past. Overall i realized how big of an impact design can have as a whole.

it`s FONT-mental

This font was found at the restaurant Street Craves. It is printed on what is supposed to resemble a street sign and that is how the waiter knows where to bring the food. The font looks much like the font on real street signs which is what is it designed for. The letters are large and clear which draw attention to the words and make them easy to read. I think this font was chosen for that purpose, so the waiters could easily see the words to know where to bring the food.

 This font was found on a drink cup at a restaurant called Freakin` Unbelievable Burgers. This font is very bold and is the middle of the cup which makes it stand out. I think this font was chosen to emphasize the "freakin`" part of the name. The font being so bold makes one wonder what is so FREAKIN` unbelievable about the burgers which is what i think it is designed for so it attracts customers and makes them want to try their food.

 This font was found on a coffee mug that I use everyday. It is more of a girly font which obviously attracts girls like me who are suckers for cute things like this. It looks elegant and cozy to me which is what I think the designer wanted it to look like. You want to be comfortable and feel good in the mornings when you are drinking your coffee and this font makes me feel that way.

 This font was found on my parking ticket I got the other day. It is large and bold because the design of this was meant to let you know.... you messed up. The font being white in color on a blue background makes it standout even more. The whole purpose of this font is for it to draw attention and make sure it is not ignored. I think the designer wanted this to be simple but yet attention drawing so it would easily get the point across that you are not supposed to park there.

This font was found on a prescription bottle form meijer. The meijer logo font is very large which is immediately noticed. I think this was designed this way so that the focus would be on the brand meijer to attract business. It`s also in red which is a major attention grabber. The lowercase letters make it simple in a way too which I like. I think the designer of this wanted the font to be bold and attention grabbing but also simple letting people know that they provide for everyone. 

Analysis 9 and 10

The 9th movie I reviewed was Emily Bramel`s movie on Keeneland. Overall Emily did a great job of addressing all parts of the rubric. She very clearly points out where she talks about each of the 5 big points and does a great job of connecting her artifact to each. The only part about the way she did this that I didn't like was that it was a lot of words on a page and got a little bit hard to read. By the end of it I was tired of reading words. I think she could have done a little bit better of a job with the craft of the movie but overall it was very good and covered everything it was supposed to.

The 10th and final movie I reviewed was Haven Dumond`s movie on his car. I was extremely impressed with this movie. Although this movie didn't have voice over`s either, the slides that had the words on them were very easy to read and weren't distracting. The movie covered all parts of the rubric very clearly and in great detail. The overall craft of the movie was very good. I really enjoyed the videos of the things crashing into the car, it did a good job of portraying a design feature of the vehicle. This was one of my favorite movie`s. Haven did a great job connecting his artifact to all parts of the rubric. 

Analysis 7 and 8

The 7th movie I reviewed was Lexi Watts movie on Rupp Arena. Lexi did a fantastic job with the craft her movie i thought. The images and videos she included of Rupp really bought the stadium to life for the viewer. Although she did not point out each part of the rubric as clearly as some of the other movies I have reviewed did, I still believe she covered all parts there was to talk about. My favorite part was where she included a clip from coach Cal talking. I especially enjoyed the way she described how Rupp connects to media, that was the most clear point to me.

The 8th movie I reviewed was Spencer Anderson`s movie. This movie was overall very good and covered everything on the rubric exactly but it did not include any sound besides music. I would have enjoyed this movie more if he would have included voice overs instead of just slides with words on them. It got a little bit boring to look at after awhile because there was so many words. The images and videos he included looked very nice though and tied the whole movie together very well. 

Analysis 5 and 6

Holly did an absolutely fantastic job. This was by far my favorite movie to watch so far. I loved every single part of it. Not only did she cover everything on the rubric but the craft of the movie was amazing. She discussed and connected all 5 parts of the rubric very well throughout her movie. I really enjoyed the flow of the movie and how the voice overs were constant as the images were playing. The videos she included looked great and really brought the movie to life. I am very impressed with this movie. I think that it deserves a 100.

The second movie I watched was Hope Stewarts. I think she did fairly well. She seems to have covered all parts of the rubric and did a good job of connecting her artifact or place in this case to social and cultural practices and also business and media. I also enjoyed the video footage she had at the begging of her movie. The pictures she included were good but I would have liked to see more video footage because the really tied the whole movie together. The big logo in the middle of the screen was distracting though and took away from the craft of the movie a little bit.
