She sees design in health care with how it works and how the needs of the providers, patients and visitors is all met. She and believes in experimental learning, she encourages to go to places to learn. She also sees design in cohousing where one big house is surrounded by smaller houses to create a sense of community. She believes that design will be utilized to impact social issues and to give back.

The 12th designer was Mark O`Bryan who is an architect. He got his degree from UK and met his wife who is an interior designer here. He has teaches and practices and loves to study and learn. He has built churches and lots of other religious buildings. He is inspired by the greek myth of the wings,  the labyrinth, and his stamp/logo. He takes students on trips to paris, rome,  and Greece to help them experience architecture. Design Profile 9-10

The 9th designer was Randall Vaughn. Vaughn is an architect and president of Gray Architects and Engineers. He is a University of Kentucky Alum of the college of Architecture. He believes that design is apart of every aspect of our lives from the clothes we wear to the cars that we drive and he believes that everything was designed for a purpose. He asked a few of his colleagues the questions we have been discussing and here were some of their responses..
 -Design can influence everything
-Design can bring order or cause chaos
-good design is seamless and comfortable
-the next few steps of the profession tend to point to architects and designers coming together and having multiple trades
-technologies don't allow for better design, just allow the buyer to see what they are buying better.

The 10th designer was Helen Turner. She sums up her design story in one word "opportunity".
She got her undergraduate degree from Ohio University in interior architecture. She started practicing right away working at a small design firm and then got a job at a larger firm. She was laid off but this pushed her to go back to school and get her masters of science in architecture. She also had the opportunity to go on a 5 week archaeological dig in Pompay. She believes design can have both a positive and negative effect on our world. She is very interested in energy efficient and environmental efficient design and sees design moving towards that way.

Designer Profile 7-8

The 7th designer was Timothy Lucas who is an architect. His father was an interior designer so he was interested in design from a young age. He got his bachelor of arts and architecture from the university of Kentucky in 11974. He worked at many different places throughout his life that involved architecture and eventually started his own firm Lucas/Schwering Architects. He believes that design is in everything around us from the clothes that we wear to the artifacts that we use in every day lives. He thinks that when design is well done it has the ability to transform the lives of the people who use the designed thing. As far as where design is headed, he thins that computers have transformed that design profession and that the use of computers will only continue to expand. He hopes that this will be a source of better communication and collaboration.

The 8th designer was Melody Jackson. She teaches first year architecture here at UK. She originally did not know that she wanted to be a designer and was originally on the pre-med track, but she was always inspired by the work of Leonardo Devinvci. She had the opportunity to study in Scotland. She believes that all choices are design choices and is inspired by things that involve a lot of imagination and creativity. She believes that design is headed in a collaborative path and that design is beginning to blend with other fields like engineering.

Designer Profile 5-6

The 5th designer was Adriane Grumbein. She majored in communications and now teaches in the integrated communications section specifically marketing and creativity classes. Her design story began when she was in high school and she designed the schools web page. Once she decided design was her thing she entered college as an art major but then switched it to a communications major. She did so because her view of design was more of a problem solving approach. She enjoys helping students take raw ideas into finished products. She believes that design is everywhere which will lead to design be more connected with business to communicate their ideas.

The 6th designer was Joe Ray Barreau. He is an architect, lighting designer, and a teacher at UK. He has a lot of experience in design and loves to share his knowledge with his students. His love for design started when he designed a tree house in Cuba with his father. He has come to the realization that the things we don't normally focus on mean a lot in design. For that reason he works mainly in lighting. He believes that the newest technological development in lighting has created a revolution and that LED light has changed the way lighting is done forever. It is being incorporated everywhere and has opened up a whole new world for lighting.

Designer Profile 2,3 and 4

The second designer we heard from was Adam Langston. Adam became interested in design at a very  young age. He knew by the time that he was in middle school that he wanted to be an architect. He took some drafting classes in high school and eventually went on to enter the architect program at UK his second year of college. He went and studied abroad in Paris and Rome may and june of 2014. During this time he began to learn that there are all kinds of design ideas that aren't knew but can be implemented in new ways. As for the future for design he thinks that technology is taking over which is making collaboration a lot easier. He also believes there will be a lot more 3D printed and digitally fabricated things.

The third designer we heard from was Julie Sniadowski. Julie`s designer story starts with an art background. She took painting classes at an early age and was accepted into the Governor`s School of the Arts in high school. She received her bachelors degree from UK. During her second year she got more into digital fabrication and drawing on the computer. She also studied abroad in Paris and Rome like Adam. She draws a lot of inspiration around her. She believes that there is nothing original, just evolution or improvement. For the future of design she thinks that there will be an expansion in technology an expansion in what problems are tackled.

The fourth designer we heard from was Heather Hemmer. She originally was not interested in design and would have never predicted this is where she would end up. Her junior year of high school she took and art class and became interested. She continued to take similar classes during her freshman year of college and learned how to use the computer programs during her second year. She also thinks that design is all evolution and that you have to let it talk to you. Designing something is what makes you, you. She also likes to make use of someone else`s trash. For the future of design related to her, she wants to actually go out and see designed things in person. She is going to Thailand in the winter and eventually wants to move to San Francisco.

Designer Profile 1

The first designer was Patrick L Lucas. He currently is the director of interiors here at the University of Kentucky and has been in this position since 2013. Lucas grew up around across from an architect so he got interested at an early age. His design story starts at architect school where he got his degree in Cincinnati. His 5th year however he changed his mind and got a certificate in historic preservation. He got a call to teach a design history course and found that he enjoyed it. He got his masters in interior from UK and his American Studies degree from Michigan State, and is now in the position he currently holds. Through the artifacts he mentioned one can speculate that he is a fan of light, curved shapes, things that tell a story, and repeating patterns. In terms of what he thinks is next for design at UK he thinks there is a possibility of a product design degree being added and a possible relocation to the rebuilds building. In terms of design as a whole he believes social media and technology is shifting the way things are designed and shifting the rolls of design.

Museum of You

1. My Iphone
2. My clothes( comfortable cheer clothes)
3. Cheer shoes
4. My north face backpack
5. Candles
6. My Bible
7.  Mac Laptop
8.  Mac Make-up
9. My Car a jeep liberty
10.My cheerleading uniform

These artifacts to me describe the things that are present in my life everyday. The two biggies here are school and cheer which are seen in my backpack, lap top, cheer shoes, and cheer uniform. These artifacts show that i am incredibly busy. My phone probably says the most about me though because that is the artifact that has the most about me on it. It includes pictures, my music, my apps I like, and my messages. The clothes I wear (which is usually more on the comfortable side) shows that I enjoy to feel comfy when I am out and about. My Bible is a big one also because this lets people know that I am a Christian and that God is a big part of my life. I added make up because it is something that I use every single day. I also am a huge fan of candles, this shows that enjoy to come in to a room with a nice smell and just relax.

Movie Review

The three movies Wall-e, Helvetica, and Everything Illuminated are all very different but are related to each other through design elements that connect them. Wall-e is about a robot who has been left on a trash filled Earth all alone and has to clean up and compact the trash. Wall-e is a collector and finds a plant that he adds to his collection. Wall-e meets another robot on Earth named Eve who was sent to Earth to find living plants. He shows her the plant and she it is immediately stored in her compartment and her system shuts down. The spaceship comes to get Eve and Wall-E follows realizing that there are humans on the ship along with many other technological devices that make life easier for humans. Wall-e and Eve end up falling in love. Eve has trouble getting the plant to the part of the ship so they can return to earth because of the autopilot. She eventually gets the plant where it needs to be so they can return back to Earth. Helvetica is documentary about a typeface. It described the use of the font Helvetica and how commonly it is used of how simple and easy it is to read. It explains how it is used for magazines, advertisements, billboards and many other ways because of its simple design. The movie Everything Illuminated is about a collector Johnathan who receives a photo from his grandmother of his grandfather and a woman Augustine. He sets out to search for this woman because he knows she saved his grandfather in the war. On his journey he meets a woman named Lista who is also a collector and happens to be Augusitines sister. Lisa gives Jonathan a box so he can understand his grandfather`s past better.

Helvetica shows the use of design through a typeface. The movie describes how the the font helvetica has made reading things clear and easy. It eventually became seen everywhere because it`s plain style. Words and fonts are important when it comes to things like advertising so many people have adopted this font because it is simple and bold. It gets the point across in a very simple manner that everyone can understand.

In everything illuminated design is seen in the collection aspect of the film. Johnathan and Lista both are collectors and the things they collect show insight to who they are. The film shows how simple designed things can have a bigger meaning and have the ability to tell a story. After Johnathan found Lista and received the box he was able to connect with his grandfather and see into his past. This shows how it may not be obvious but the design of something and what someone takes from it can tell a lot about a person.

Wall-e had elements of design throughout the whole movie. The technology that was shown in the movie emphasized how those designed objects were basically essential to humans and their survival because they had become so dependent on the technology. The humans had to have the technology to function because they had become so overweight and unable to move much.  Wall-e himself was a designed artifact because he is a robot. The movie itself is also animated which took a lot of design to put together. All of these features of the film have the idea of design in them.

In each of these movies design is a major part of the movie even if it is not originally seen. Helvetica is about a designed font, Wall-e is about a designed robot, and in Everything Illuminated Johnathan collects designed artifacts. Although the design elements are somewhat different for each of the movies, they still have a connection. This goes to show how design can be influential in a number of different ways whether is be through a font or a artifact.

I think that the biggest lesson I learned from this was how big of an impact design can have without it even really being known. It may not always be obvious but with just about anything you see, there is a design element to it.  I learned that design is in every aspect of life and can be influential in many different ways. Something as simple as the design of a font can allow people to read and understand better. I think watching these movies also showed the number of ways design can enhance the human experience like we`ve discussed in class before. The font made things easier to read, the technology in wall-e made the humans lives easier, and the artifacts Johnathan collected gave him insight to his grandfather`s past. Overall i realized how big of an impact design can have as a whole.
