If you build it

In the movie if you build it design is used as a form of advocacy to help the community of Bertie county. A design program is implemented for students and provides them with a hands on learning experience. There was not much opportunity in the county for young people and they were not provided with much of a learning experience in the classroom. The Studio H program allowed the students to learn in a different way and work on projects that made the community better. The farmers market that they built was a huge way to impact the community for the better, providing jobs and a place to get food for a lower price. I think that using design in this was as a form of advocacy is great because it gave the students a sense of opportunity and a feeling that what they were doing was important. I think using design as a form of advocacy and programs like Studio H could help many other communities like it did Bertie county.

Design Profile 9-10

The 9th designer was Randall Vaughn. Vaughn is an architect and president of Gray Architects and Engineers. He is a University of Kentucky Alum of the college of Architecture. He believes that design is apart of every aspect of our lives from the clothes we wear to the cars that we drive and he believes that everything was designed for a purpose. He asked a few of his colleagues the questions we have been discussing and here were some of their responses..
 -Design can influence everything
-Design can bring order or cause chaos
-good design is seamless and comfortable
-the next few steps of the profession tend to point to architects and designers coming together and having multiple trades
-technologies don't allow for better design, just allow the buyer to see what they are buying better.

The 10th designer was Helen Turner. She sums up her design story in one word "opportunity".
She got her undergraduate degree from Ohio University in interior architecture. She started practicing right away working at a small design firm and then got a job at a larger firm. She was laid off but this pushed her to go back to school and get her masters of science in architecture. She also had the opportunity to go on a 5 week archaeological dig in Pompay. She believes design can have both a positive and negative effect on our world. She is very interested in energy efficient and environmental efficient design and sees design moving towards that way.

Designer Profile 2,3 and 4

The second designer we heard from was Adam Langston. Adam became interested in design at a very  young age. He knew by the time that he was in middle school that he wanted to be an architect. He took some drafting classes in high school and eventually went on to enter the architect program at UK his second year of college. He went and studied abroad in Paris and Rome may and june of 2014. During this time he began to learn that there are all kinds of design ideas that aren't knew but can be implemented in new ways. As for the future for design he thinks that technology is taking over which is making collaboration a lot easier. He also believes there will be a lot more 3D printed and digitally fabricated things.

The third designer we heard from was Julie Sniadowski. Julie`s designer story starts with an art background. She took painting classes at an early age and was accepted into the Governor`s School of the Arts in high school. She received her bachelors degree from UK. During her second year she got more into digital fabrication and drawing on the computer. She also studied abroad in Paris and Rome like Adam. She draws a lot of inspiration around her. She believes that there is nothing original, just evolution or improvement. For the future of design she thinks that there will be an expansion in technology an expansion in what problems are tackled.

The fourth designer we heard from was Heather Hemmer. She originally was not interested in design and would have never predicted this is where she would end up. Her junior year of high school she took and art class and became interested. She continued to take similar classes during her freshman year of college and learned how to use the computer programs during her second year. She also thinks that design is all evolution and that you have to let it talk to you. Designing something is what makes you, you. She also likes to make use of someone else`s trash. For the future of design related to her, she wants to actually go out and see designed things in person. She is going to Thailand in the winter and eventually wants to move to San Francisco.
